Corridor8 worked with Yorkshire Sculpture International for its first iteration, a festival of sculpture taking place at venues and in public spaces across Leeds and Wakefield in Summer 2019. Reflecting on the significance of this new festival within our social, political and cultural contexts, Corridor8 partnered with YSI’s engagement curator Meghan Goodeve to produce In Your Hands, a digital publication with contributions from Goodeve, Corridor8 managing editor Lara Eggleton, and writer and artist Jennifer Boyd. It was designed with Sam Baldwin and supported by Arts Council England, and Leeds and Wakefield City Councils.
Starting with the concept of ‘material literacy’, YSI’s engagement programme sought to communicate and enact particular kinds of knowledge and learning that can only be gleaned through physical processes, and that are often sidelined in favour of the ocular. With In Your Hands there is a rare opportunity to reflect on the nature of arts engagement with criticality and expertise, paying close and careful attention to an area of contemporary programming that is rarely considered with the same depth as exhibitions.
