Over summer 2019 the first Yorkshire Sculpture International festival took place at venues and in public spaces across Leeds and Wakefield. Reflecting on the significance of this new festival within our social, political and cultural contexts, Corridor8 has partnered with YSI to produce In Your Hands, a digital publication focussing on the engagement programme developed by curator Meghan Goodeve, with contributions from Goodeve, Corridor8 Managing Editor Lara Eggleton and writer and artist Jennifer Boyd. It was designed and developed with Sam Baldwin and supported by Arts Council England, and Leeds and Wakefield City Councils.
Starting with the concept of ‘material literacy’, YSI’s engagement programme sought to communicate and enact particular kinds of knowledge and learning that can only be gleaned through physical processes, and that are often sidelined in favour of the ocular. With In Your Hands there is a rare opportunity to reflect on the nature of arts engagement with criticality and expertise, paying close and careful attention to an area of contemporary programming that is rarely considered with the same depth as exhibitions.
