Fee: £1,200 (8 days at £150/day)
Residency period: July – September 2022
Deadline for applications: 10am, 23 May 2022
Corridor8 (C8) and The Art House Wakefield (TAH) invite proposals from writers based in the North of England to respond to the work of artist Permindar Kaur as part of her forthcoming exhibition (September – November 2022), and explore related themes or ideas around home, cultural belonging and identity. The successful applicant will receive mentoring from an established writer to develop a critical and/or creative response between 2,500 and 3,000 words, which will be sensitively refined with editors and published on the Corridor8 website in October.
C8 and TAH are committed to nurturing and championing diverse creative voices. This residency is designed for writers based in the North of England from a Global Majority background (people who are Black, Asian, Brown, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and/or have been racialised as ‘ethnic minorities’), making space for people who have traditionally been marginalised and underrepresented in art writing.
The residency will be flexible with a mixture of remote and in-venue working, and be responsive to the needs of the successful applicant. There will be coworking desk space available at TAH for the duration of the residency (booked by appointment), and the writer will be supported through meetings and mentoring sessions throughout.
Access
Corridor8 and The Art House are committed to making our opportunities accessible to all and supporting those facing barriers to apply. This includes support for disabled, learning disabled and neurodivergent writers, and those with long-term health conditions.
If you need any support to enable you to put your application together, or if you have any further questions, please contact Lara Eggleton at Corridor8.
We will work with the selected writer on an access ‘rider’ document to outline and address any disability access needs. Any costs associated with access needs will be covered by Corridor8 and The Art House.
To find out more about accessibility at The Art House, please visit this page on our website: https://the-arthouse.org.uk/about/access/
How to apply
To apply, please follow this link to the application form.
We accept applications in multiple formats: PDF, word, video or audio file. If you would prefer to submit your answers in these formats, please use access ‘rider’ document at this stage, you are encouraged to do so. Your access document will not be read by the selection panel until a decision has been made.
Selection process
In order to prevent unconscious bias, all personal details will be removed from submissions before being reviewed by the selection panel. The panel will make their selection based on the suitability of proposals, sensitivity of approach and the potential of writing samples.
The selection panel includes Lara Eggleton (Director and Managing Editor, Corridor8) and Damon Jackson Waldock (Programme Director, The Art House) and external panel member and mentor Annalisa Toccara (Writer, Cultural Producer, Communications and Marketing Consultant).
We will aim to notify all applicants of the decision by 10 June 2022. There will be a 20-minute phone or zoom interview for shortlisted applicants, at a mutually agreed time.
Equal Opportunities
When you have submitted your application, you will be invited to complete an equal opportunities monitoring form. This form is designed to gather information which helps us maintain equal opportunities best practice and identify barriers to equality and diversity across our artistic communities. This information will be recorded anonymously, will be held separately from your application and will play no part in the selection process.
The residency is supported by The Art House and part of Corridor8’s 2021-2023 partnership and commissioning programme, funded by Arts Council England.
