Studio of Sanctuary writing residency callout 2021

Fee: £1,200 (8 days at £150/day)

Residency period: June – August 2021

Deadline for applications: 5pm, 23 May 2021

Corridor8 and The Art House Wakefield invite proposals from writers based in the North of England to work with Iranian printmaker Mohammad Barrangi. The successful applicant will receive mentoring from an established writer to develop a critical and/or creative response to Barrangi’s practice and relevant themes or experiences that arise from the collaboration. The final work, between 2,500 and 3,000 words, will be sensitively refined with editors and published on the Corridor8 website.

The Art House is the first Studio of Sanctuary in the UK, providing professional artists who are seeking asylum in the UK or who have refugee status with the time, space and support they need to rebuild their portfolios, develop their practices and establish professional networks. To find out more about Barrangi’s work in his studio at The Art House, please follow this link to a film produced by Wakefield District City of Sanctuary or visit his Instagram here.

Corridor8 and The Art House are committed to nurturing and championing diverse creative voices. This residency is designed for writers based in the North of England who have faced cultural, social, physical, economic or other barriers to pursuing a career in the arts, making space for people who have traditionally been marginalised and underrepresented in art writing.

This residency may take place partially or fully online, depending on Covid-19 restrictions and the needs of the successful applicant. In the event of in-person studio visits being possible, there will be desk space available at The Art House for the duration of the residency. Barrangi’s native language is Farsi but he also speaks English so you do not need to speak Farsi to apply for this residency. We will work with the selected writer and artist to ensure smooth and effective communication throughout the residency.

Access

Corridor8 and The Art House are committed to making our opportunities accessible to all and supporting those facing barriers to apply. This includes support for disabled, learning disabled and neurodivergent writers, and those with long-term health conditions.

If you need any support to enable you to put your application together, or if you have any further questions, please contact us through The Art House website.

We will work with the selected writer on an access ‘rider’ document to outline and address any disability access needs. Any costs associated with access needs will be covered by Corridor8 and The Art House.

To find out more about accessibility at The Art House, please visit this page on our website: https://the-arthouse.org.uk/about/access/

How to apply

To apply, please follow this link to the application form.

We accept applications in multiple formats: PDF, word, video or audio file. If you would prefer to submit your answers in these formats, please use this form.

The application form will invite you to share with us:

  • Why you are interested in this opportunity and how you would approach the residency (up to 250 words)
  • How this opportunity will help you to overcome barriers faced in pursuing your writing practice (up to 250 words)
  • A sample of writing of up to 1000 words (published or unpublished, in full or as an excerpt)
  • A short CV (no more than 2 sides of A4)

If you wish to provide an access ‘rider’ document at this stage, you are encouraged to do so. Your access document will not be read by the selection panel until a decision has been made.

Selection process

In order to prevent unconscious bias, all personal details will be removed from submissions before being reviewed by the selection panel. The panel will make their selection based on the suitability of proposals, sensitivity of approach and the potential of writing samples.

The selection panel includes Sufea Mohamad Noor (Freelance Artist, Curator and Fundraiser) and Khadijah Ibrahiim (founder of Leeds Young Authors), Lara Eggleton (Director, Corridor8) and Emily Riddle (Programme Director, The Art House).

We will aim to notify all applicants of the decision by 11 June 2021.

Equal Opportunities

When you have submitted your application, you will be invited to complete an equal opportunities monitoring form. This form is designed to gather information which helps us maintain equal opportunities best practice and identify barriers to equality and diversity across our artistic communities. This information will be recorded anonymously, will be held separately from your application and will play no part in the selection process.

The residency is supported by The Art House and part of Corridor8’s 2021-2023 partnership and commissioning programme, funded by Arts Council England.
